Is @downloadURL actually necessary for the userscript to update, when installed via a userscript manager?

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/38023717/why-is-usage-of-the-downloadurl-updateurl-keys-called-unusual-and-how-do-they suggests these keys are discouraged.

I run this with Violentmonkey and I am not very familiar with the other userscript runners.
